Frequently Asked Questions

1. General Information About the Trip

1.1 What exactly is a coffee tour with Cofitur?

Our coffee journey is much more than an ordinary trip—it is an intense, authentic experience for all the senses. It takes you right to the heart of Colombian coffee production, to the picturesque region of Huila. There you will learn about the stories and people who, with passion and craftsmanship, make every bean something special. From harvesting to roasting, you will be right in the middle of it all, experiencing the process firsthand, participating in cuppings, and understanding the importance of quality, sustainability, and community—all accompanied by an experienced German-Spanish-speaking team. This will help you form a connection to your coffee that will last a lifetime. More information can be found here.

2.2 How long does the journey take?

The Cofitur coffee tour usually lasts seven days—an intense week that gives you enough time to immerse yourself in the world of coffee, make new friends, and enjoy Colombia's breathtaking nature and culture at the same time.

1.3 When do the trips take place? Are there fixed dates?

1.4 How big are the tour groups?

We place great value on personal encounters and intensive learning experiences. That's why our groups are deliberately small and exclusive: we usually travel with four people. If we do a tour with eight people, Vera comes along too. This creates space for individual questions, genuine exchange, and a familiar atmosphere in which you quickly feel at home.

1.5 Where exactly in Colombia will the trip take place?

Join us as we explore the magical coffee region of Huila, particularly the area around San Agustín and Pitalito. Here, lush nature, cultural treasures, and traditional coffee fincas come together. From the finca to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, this region tells stories that go far beyond coffee.

1.6 What does a typical day during the trip look like?

Each day is designed to immerse you deeply in the world of coffee—whether through visits to coffee fincas, exciting workshops on sorting and processing, or sensory sessions such as cuppings. There is also plenty of time to discover the fascinating nature and culture of the region: explore local markets, enjoy the view during a relaxing coffee break, or exchange impressions with other participants. In the evenings, shared meals and inspiring conversations combine to create a successful conclusion that gives you time to reflect and recharge your batteries. You can find out more about the program here.

1.7 Is this more of a vacation or an educational trip?

Our coffee tour is an intensive educational journey with heart. It is aimed at anyone who not only wants to enjoy coffee, but also wants to understand what goes into every cup. Nevertheless, there is still room for enjoyment and relaxation—for example, during walks in nature or visits to cultural highlights. You will return enriched, with new impressions and genuine connections.

1.8 Is there free time or is there no time for relaxation?

Leisure time in the traditional sense is not the focus of our trip. Instead, everything revolves around intensive learning and experiential phases that allow you to immerse yourself deeply in the world of coffee. There are breaks and quieter moments, but the emphasis is on discovering new things together and gaining valuable experiences. Of course, there is also room for your own activities or short relaxation breaks, so that each participant can tailor the trip to their individual needs.

1.9 In which language will the trip be conducted?

The tour guide is bilingual: German and Spanish. This means you can be sure that all content will be conveyed clearly, even if you don't speak Spanish. Our guides are always available to answer any questions you may have.

2. Preparation & Booking

2.1 How can I book or request a coffee tour?

It's easy: just use our online enquiry form on the website or send us an email. We will get back to you quickly, discuss your requirements and answer any questions you may have. Our advice is non-binding and free of charge – we will accompany you every step of the way to your unforgettable coffee journey experience.

2.2 How far in advance should I register?

We recommend that you register as early as possible—ideally three to six months before your desired travel date. Since our groups are small and exclusive, places fill up quickly. Registering early secures your place and allows us to plan optimally so that your trip meets your expectations exactly.

2.3 Do I need any prior knowledge of coffee?

No, no prior knowledge is required! Our trips are designed so that both coffee novices and experienced baristas, traders, or roasters can gain valuable insights. We start with the basics and offer exciting workshops and practical experiences that build on different levels of knowledge. This makes the trip an enriching experience for all participants.

2.4 Is the trip also suitable for solo travelers?

Absolutely. Our small groups offer a warm atmosphere where it's easy to socialize and make friends. Solo travelers are very welcome at Cofitur and quickly become part of the community. Our tour guides will help you feel at home and get the most out of your stay.

2.5 Is there a minimum age or other conditions for participation?

To participate, we recommend that you be in normal physical shape and enjoy traveling and learning. There is no strict minimum age requirement, but the trip is mainly aimed at adults and young adults who are active and curious. If you have any specific questions or needs, we will be happy to help you.

2.6 What documents do I need to enter Colombia?

To enter Colombia, you need a valid passport that is ideally valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Depending on your country of origin and purpose of travel, there may be additional entry requirements, such as an electronic entry card or proof of vaccinations. We recommend that you check with official sources such as the State Department well in advance of your trip.

2.7 Do I need a visa for Colombia?

To enter Colombia, you need a valid passport that, ideally, is valid for at least six months after your return date. In addition, depending on your country of origin and the reason for your trip, there may be other entry requirements, such as an electronic entry card or vaccination certificates. We recommend that you check in advance with official bodies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2.8 Which vaccinations are recommended?

In general, you should have all standard vaccinations, such as tetanus, diphtheria, and hepatitis A/B. Vaccinations against yellow fever are also recommended for Colombia, especially if you are traveling to areas below 2,300 meters above sea level. Pitalito is below this altitude, so vaccination is recommended. Please note that the yellow fever vaccination should be administered at least 10 days before departure. However, there are no checks upon entry, so it is up to you whether you want to be vaccinated or not.

2.9 Are there any health risks or things I should be aware of?

Colombia is a safe travel destination, but you should be aware of the altitude: While Huila, especially Pitalito, is located at about 1,700 m, you will most likely arrive first in Bogotá, which is significantly higher at around 2,600 m. The higher altitude in Bogotá can take some getting used to for some travelers and increase the risk of altitude sickness. We therefore recommend allowing sufficient time for acclimatization. In addition, Huila has a tropical climate, which is why sun protection, adequate hydration, and good insect repellent are important. Of course, you should also observe general hygiene and safety measures. Before your trip, we will provide you with all the important information you need to be well prepared.

3. Process & Content

3.1 How practical is the trip really? Do I have to participate?

Our coffee trip is deliberately designed to be practical. You will not only gain theoretical knowledge, but will also be actively involved in everyday coffee life on the fincas – from observing and harvesting to sorting and cupping. However, participation is voluntary: everyone can find their own rhythm and participate as much as they like. The aim is to develop a deep understanding of the entire process through practical experience and to appreciate the work on site.
